Butterfly Valve Use Precautions

Butterfly valve as a piping system used to achieve the through and flow control components have been in the petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, hydropower and many other fields have been widely used, and its installation, operation, maintenance and so on there are many precautions, this article on these precautions to do a brief introduction.

      1、Installation

Correct installation position: when installing butterfly valves, it is necessary to pay attention to the flow direction of the medium and the arrow direction indicates the same, to ensure that the valve can work properly. For example, when installing on the horizontal pipeline, the valve stem should be vertically upward, or tilted at a certain angle, but it is not allowed to install the valve stem downward; for the valves in the trench with cover plate, the convenience of installation, maintenance and operation should be considered.

Ensure the installation space: It is necessary to ensure that there is enough space above and below the butterfly valve for inspection and maintenance. For flange-connected valve bodies, it is necessary to ensure that the flange faces are accurately aligned so that the gasket surfaces are evenly contacted to prevent leakage.

Avoid additional stress: Do not apply additional stress to the valve during installation, such as over-tightening the connecting bolts or forcibly twisting the valve. The bolts should be tightened evenly according to the specified torque value, and when connecting the pipeline, ensure that the pipeline and the valve are in good concentricity to avoid damage to the valve due to excessive stress caused by non-centricity.

       2、Operation

Opening and closing strength: When manually operating the butterfly valve, the force should be even, avoiding too strong or too light force. Too strong may damage the internal structure of the valve, too light may not be able to fully open or close the valve. Especially in some larger caliber or high pressure butterfly valves, more attention should be paid to the control of the operating force.

Control opening degree: If the butterfly valve is used to control the flow rate, it should be noted that the relationship between its opening degree and flow rate is not completely linear. When regulating the flow, the opening degree of the valve should be reasonably controlled according to the actual demand to avoid inaccurate flow control or damage to the valve due to improper opening degree.

Prevent foreign objects from entering: Before the valve is opened, check whether there are foreign objects (such as welding slag, debris, etc.) in the pipeline, because these foreign objects may damage the sealing surface of the valve, or even hinder the normal operation of the spool, ball or butterfly plate, resulting in the valve not being able to close properly.

Avoid frequent operation: Try to avoid switching the butterfly valve on and off too frequently, because frequent action will accelerate the wear and tear of the valve parts and reduce the service life of the valve. If you need to frequently adjust the flow or control the medium on and off, consider using other types of valves that are more suitable for frequent operation.

      3、Maintenance

Regularly check the appearance: regularly check the appearance of the butterfly valve, check whether the valve body, valve disc, valve stem and other parts are worn, corroded or loose. If any surface corrosion, scratches or deformation are found, they should be treated or replaced in time.

Clean the inside of the valve body: clean the inside of the valve body regularly to prevent impurities from accumulating inside the valve and affecting the normal operation of the valve. According to the use of the environment and the cleanliness of the medium, to determine the appropriate cleaning cycle. Appropriate cleaning agents and tools can be used for cleaning, but be careful not to damage the internal parts of the valve.

Check the sealing performance: Regularly check the wear and tear of the sealing surface of the valve seat and the sealing surface of the valve disc, if serious wear or damage is found, the seals need to be replaced in a timely manner in order to ensure the sealing performance of the valve. When replacing the seals, select high-quality sealing materials that are compatible with the valve model and medium.

Lubrication and maintenance: Regular lubrication of the valve stem and other moving parts to reduce friction and resistance, to ensure that the valve operates flexibly. Use the appropriate lubricant and lubricate in accordance with the specified lubrication period and method, but be careful not to apply excessive lubricant, so as not to cause contamination or affect the normal operation of the valve.

      4、Other aspects

Pay attention to the use of temperature: it is necessary to understand the applicable temperature range of the butterfly valve and avoid using it in temperature conditions beyond its permissible. High temperatures may lead to a decline in the performance of the valve material, seal aging failure; low temperatures may make some parts of the valve brittle, affecting its normal work. If the medium temperature is high or low, special material butterfly valves suitable for the corresponding temperature conditions should be selected.

Preventing overloading: Avoid subjecting butterfly valves to pressures or moments that exceed their rated load range, otherwise the structure of the valves may be damaged, resulting in leakage or failure of the valves to work properly. When selecting butterfly valves, the specifications and models of the valves should be reasonably selected according to the pressure and flow rate of the actual working conditions and other parameters to ensure that they have sufficient load-bearing capacity.

Do a good job of protective measures: If the butterfly valve is installed in outdoor or corrosion-prone environments, corresponding protective measures should be taken, such as installing protective cover, anti-corrosion paint, etc., in order to extend the service life of the valve. In some harsh working environments, it may also be necessary to carry out special anti-corrosion treatment of the valve or choose a valve made of materials with better corrosion resistance.
