Differences between ball valves and plug valves

There are obvious differences between ball valves and plug valves in terms of structure, working principle, operation mode, flow control, sealing performance and application scenarios.

1, in the structure, the plug valve is relatively complex, it consists of valve body, bonnet, valve core, etc., the valve core is usually cylindrical or conical; the structure of ball valve is relatively simple, it consists of spherical valve body and orifice.

2, the working principle, plug valves control fluid flow by rotating the valve core, the valve core rotation usually requires more than one rotation; ball valves by rotating the ball to achieve open and close, only need to rotate 90 degrees.

3, the operation mode, plug valve operation requires greater torque, rotate the number of turns, suitable for regulating the flow but not suitable for frequent operation; ball valve operation is convenient, rotate 90 degrees to complete the switch, suitable for rapid switching applications.

4, flow control, plug valves in the flow regulation of good performance, can accurately control the diameter of the fluid channel; ball valve flow regulation performance is relatively poor, although the opening can be adjusted by rotating, but not as flexible as the plug valve.

5, sealing performance, plug valve sealing performance is better, usually with a multi-channel sealing design, suitable for sealing requirements of high occasions; ball valve theoretical sealing performance is slightly worse, but with the improvement of technology, the sealing effect is getting better and better, the scope of application is gradually expanding.

6、Application scenarios, plug valves are widely used in oilfield mining, conveying and refining equipment, as well as occasions that require precise flow control and good sealing, such as cooling water systems, heating systems, steam systems, etc.; ball valves are widely used in the petroleum, chemical, paper, pharmaceutical and other industries, and are suitable for applications that require quick opening or closing, such as natural gas pipelines, air-conditioning systems, irrigation systems and so on.

The choice of a ball or plug valve depends on the specific needs of the application. If precise flow control and good sealing performance are required, plug valves may be a better choice; while if fast switching and low-pressure loss are required, ball valves are more suitable. In practical applications, various factors should be fully considered to select the most suitable valve to ensure the safe, stable and efficient operation of the fluid control system.
