What are the factors that affect the magnitude of the valve opening torque

   The magnitude of the opening torque of a valve can be affected by the type and mechanism of the valve, the size and pressure rating of the valve, the nature of the medium and the operating conditions.

    1. Valve type and construction: The magnitude of the opening torque can vary from one type of valve to another. For example, ball valves usually have a small opening torque because the spool of a ball valve is a sphere with less sealing friction against the valve seat and less resistance to the passage of fluid through the ball valve. Gate valves, on the other hand, have a relatively large opening torque because the spool of a gate valve is a flat plate with a large sealing friction between it and the valve seat, and because the fluid needs to change direction when passing through a gate valve, which creates a large resistance.

    The structural design of the valve also affects the opening torque. Reasonable structural design can reduce the sealing friction, stem and packing friction, stem and bearing friction and fluid force, thereby reducing the opening torque. For example, the use of elastic sealing structure can reduce sealing friction; optimize the contact area of the valve stem and packing can reduce the stem and packing friction; choose the right type of bearing and mounting method can reduce the stem and bearing friction.

    2. Valve size and pressure rating: The larger the size of the valve, the greater the opening torque will usually be. This is because of the large size of the valve spool, stem and other components of the weight is greater, the need to overcome the friction is also correspondingly larger. At the same time, the sealing area of large-size valves is also larger, and the sealing friction torque will also increase.

    The higher the pressure rating of the valve, the greater the opening torque will be. This is because the pressure between the sealing surfaces of the valve increases at high pressures, and the sealing friction torque increases accordingly. Also, the force of the fluid increases at high pressures, thus increasing the torque required to open the valve.

   3. Fluid properties: Fluid viscosity, density, temperature and other properties will affect the opening torque of the valve. Viscosity of the fluid through the valve will produce greater resistance, thereby increasing the opening torque. Density of the fluid on the spool of the valve to produce a larger force, will increase the opening torque. Changes in temperature will affect the viscosity and density of the fluid, thus indirectly affecting the opening torque of the valve. For example, at high temperatures the viscosity of the fluid will be reduced, the density will also be reduced, which may make the opening torque reduced; but high temperatures may also make the valve sealing material softening, thus increasing the sealing friction torque.

    4. Operating conditions: The frequency of operation of the valve, operating speed and other operating conditions will also affect the opening torque. Frequent operation of the valve will cause the packing to wear out gradually, thus increasing the friction torque between the valve stem and the packing. Operating speed is too fast may cause the bearing to heat up, thus increasing the friction torque between the valve stem and the bearing. Also, operating the valve quickly may cause the fluid to generate a large impact force, increasing the fluid-acting torque.
