How to Properly Install Check Valves

一、Installation Location:
1、Must be installed on pipe sections requiring prevention of backflow, such as pump outlets, equipment outlets, or before branch lines.
2、Ensure the valve arrow direction aligns with the intended fluid flow direction. This is the most fundamental and critical requirement.
二、Installation Orientation:
1、Lift Check Valves: Must be installed on horizontal pipelines, ensuring the valve disc axis is strictly perpendicular to the horizontal plane. Otherwise, the disc cannot return by gravity, leading to failure.
2、Swing Check Valves: Preferably installed on horizontal pipelines, but may also be installed on vertical pipelines (provided the fluid flows upward). If installed vertically with downward fluid flow, the valve will never open.
3、Other types of check valves (e.g., butterfly, ball) generally have no specific orientation requirements, but consult the product manual before installation.
三、Space Considerations:
1、Sufficient disassembly space should be reserved before and after the check valve to facilitate future maintenance and replacement.
2、For swing check valves, the valve disc swings during opening. Ensure adequate clearance around it to prevent interference with other pipes or equipment.
四、 Straight Pipe Run Requirements:
To ensure stable valve performance and prevent turbulence from affecting normal valve disc operation, a straight pipe run of sufficient length (typically recommended to be at least 5 times the pipe diameter) should be provided at the inlet end of the check valve.
五、Gravity and Spring Assistance:
For vertically mounted installations with upward flow direction, if the medium pressure or flow rate is low, a spring-assisted check valve (such as a “wafer-type check valve” or “axial flow check valve”) may be required to ensure reliable closure even at low flow rates.
六、Avoid interference with other equipment:
1、Check valves should not bear the weight of pipelines; large check valves should be supported independently.
2、Check valves should not be installed in locations prone to severe vibration or shaking, as this may compromise their sealing and closing performance.
七、Special Operating Conditions Considerations:
1、Pump Outlet: The check valve should be installed between the pump and the outlet shut-off valve (e.g., gate valve) to isolate the water supply during check valve maintenance.
2、Water Hammer Prevention: In high-pressure systems prone to severe water hammer, select check valves with rapid closing speeds (e.g., axial flow type) and consider installing auxiliary equipment such as water hammer arresters.
